Moldavite belongs to the group of tektites, impact glasses, which can be found only at a few places around the world and the Czech Republic plays in these locations, rich in natural glass, an irreplaceable role.

THE ORIGIN OF MOLDAVITES

Till now the origin of moldavite is not completely clear. Scientists believe that the origin of Moldavite can be pieces of a meteorite that landed in the area, which is now known as Bavaria in Germany, 14.5 million years ago, or it can be pieces of terrestrial rocks that were melted during the impact. The crater, which is still attended by many collectors and enthusiasts of moldavite, is called Ries and it is a place where a large meteorite landed. The impact was so great and intense that molten rock landed up in South Bohemia and other impacts were on the territory of Moravia and the Cheb Basin. It is called moldavite rain that fell on our territory and it is assumed that from the original five millions tons of moldavite mass there is about 1% in the deposits, the remaining mass immediately evaporated under high pressure of meteorite.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, COLOUR AND STRUCTURE OF MOLDAVITE

Chemical composition of Moldavite is about 80% of SiO2 and 8-10% of Al2O3 and other iron and another inclusions (FeO, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O and TiO2). Moldavites have bottle-green colour from light to dark, in Moravia there are moldavites in brown colour. The moldavite surface has wrinkled structure, which resembles the Šumava deep forests and wild untouched nature. Due to the acidity of the soil these gemstones get shape of pebbles and the surface is not as much relief. This process can lead to complete destruction of the gemstone.

Moldavite has on the Mohs scale (where 1 = softest, 10 = hardest) hardness of 5, and it is well handled especially in jewellery and is well for grinding.

MOLDAVITE LOCALITIES

Most highly-valued are moldavite gemstones from the locality Besednice and especially Besednice - Ježkovna ("hedgehog" called for its sculprure), which is now a protected natural monument. Other known moldavite locations are for example Chlum nad Malší, Nesměň, Slavče, Dobrovská Lhotka, Dolní Lhotka, Koroseky etc (all these places are small villages in small region called South Bohemia).

There are other locations of similar tektites in the world but only little extented, such as Australia, there are so called australites, China or Thailand, from where come pieces of lower-quality and moreover there is great risk that it will most likely be a fake or artificially made stones from industrial glass. These fakes are very poorly recognizable because there is no difference between natural and synthetic glass, but real moldavite can be determined in the laboratory by the inert gas in bubbles in moldavites that are not a problem unlike other gemstones. Real moldavite is tektit natural glass and can be recognized in laboratory by the presence of Lechaterierit. Lechaterierit is pure natural silica glass. This glass is missing in all volcanic glasses. Moldavit authenticity is examined by electron microanalysis. For the first time moldavite has been described in 1788 as a so called bottled stone from Týn nad Vltavou.

BEAUTIFUL AND MYSTERIOUS MOLDAVITE

In my opinion it is better to let moldavite in the natural shape to excel its unique shape and sculpture made by nature. You will find the beauty of each gemstone then you look inside, specifically with the moldavites this is particularly true. The best view is through it, preferably against the light. Only this view captivates you and draws you into the mystical green fantasy of this gemstone. In esotericism moldavite helps to get rid of the distressing thoughts that lie at the bottom or in the depth of our soul and they weigh unknowingly on us and tie as heavy chains. It helps us break free from the burdensome shackles that keep us from motion as well as latitude and allows us to feel the unbounded freedom, which is so needed for our life as well as for fulfilment our dreams and desires. Mysterious green colour of this gemstone awakens telepathic and clairvoyant abilities in us. If we have this gift in ourselves, moldavite is the right moldavite gemstone, which will show us the right spiritual path. This imaginary path leads us into our mysterious soul. And as we slowly break free from heavy chains, as well as we get rid of the desire to have and possess, which is for the self discovery a large obstacle. The biggest effect for moldavite is the heart chakra, which can suppress our ego and purify our soul and body. Moldavite removes toxins, enhances immunity and helps with respiratory problems. As moldavite purifies our body, it is occasionally needed to clean this gemstone from negative energy and give it new strength. It is useful to rinse moldavite in lukewarm water (no hot) and let it recharge by the sun or the full moon.
